A little further up the main High Street you will find The Marlands Centre with individual boutiques and stores including The Disney Store.
Across the famous Southampton parks we have a large Debenhams store and a little further along is a the West Quay Retail park offering home furniture stores, sports stores, Next Home and a large Ikea which is a magnet for shoppers coming from far and wide.
For the Christmas season Southampton offers a delightful German Market located in the Above Bar precinct. The market consists of 40 stallholders in traditional alpine chalets selling a wide variety of Christmas gifts including wooden toys, jewellery and Christmas decorations. There will also be a good choice of traditional German fare such as Bratwurst, waffles, gingerbread hearts and candied fruit. A typical German bar will be at the heart of the market with live music events throughout the period. The market will be open from 14th November until 23rd December from 10 am to 8pm, with the bar staying open until 10 pm.
One tradition of an English Christmas is a pantomime and this year the Southampton area will not disappoint with a good choice for everyone.
Probably the biggest Pantomime in the area will be at The Mayflower Theatre, one of the largest theatres outside London. This years pantomime is Aladdin starring the very popular comedian Joe Pasquale and ex boy band member Duncan James. The Panto will contain amazing 3 D effects Including a brilliant genie and spectacular flying carpet. The Panto will run from Saturday 12th December until 3rd January. All around the Mayflower theatre you will find a great choice of places to eat before or after the show and we can recommend, Buffalo Bills, The Vestrey and Casa Italia.
Following the Panto from 13th to 17th January young families can also enjoy a lavish production of The Snowman, based upon the book by Dianne Jackson. The story tells of a young boy whose snowman comes to life on Christmas Eve and the 2 of them set off on an adventure to meet Santa. This delightful story will enchant children of all ages.
An alternative production for the Christmas season will be on at The Nuffield Theatre at Southampton University, where a production of Merlin will run from 28th November to 3rd January. This musical play will tell the tale of Prince Arthur whose destiny is to become a Knight but who is torn between loyalty to his friends and his duty to his country. Along with his friends Arthur takes an action packed journey encountering mystical characters magic forces and adventures beyond his wildest dreams. This play will be suitable for children above the age of 5.
For supporters of small independent theatres then The Berry Theatre at Wildern Land Hedge End has a great Christmas offering for all the family. A production of Little Red Riding Hood will run from 11th December until Christmas Eve. This musical production is written by Olivier award winning Mike Kenny and gives the traditional tale an enchanting twist just perfect for children aged from 4 years.
